How It All Began: The Story of Suits You
The Suits You Sexy story started on the white sands of Clearwater Beach, Florida.
Lucy was wearing a custom bikini she had designed and sewn for herself. A woman visiting from Germany stopped her to ask where she had bought it. When Lucy replied, "I made it," the woman immediately asked if Lucy could make one for her.
Lucy didn't have any others made, and the woman was flying back to Germany the very next day. She wanted the suit so badly that she offered to buy the exact bikini Lucy was wearing right then and there. They walked to a nearby surf shop, the woman bought Lucy a replacement bikini to wear home, and Lucy went to the restroom, cleaned her handmade suit, and sold it to her first official customer.
At that moment, Lucy decided it was time to get into the swimwear business.
Slow, Steady, and Handmade
Lucy started small, making custom bikinis for friends at the beach. Word spread quickly, and soon she was taking orders for specific colours and styles, eventually designing custom posing suits for bikini contests and Hooters girls.
After several years of sewing out of their home, the volume of customers dropping by made it clear: it was time to open a real store. Lucy joined forces with her husband, Clyde, and in 1996, they opened their first boutique in Clearwater, Florida.
For three years, Lucy handled the designing and sewing while Clyde managed the business, built their first website (suitsyouswimwear.com) in 1998, and even learned how to sew. By 1999, their slow and steady growth required more space, prompting a move to a larger workshop in Tampa, Florida, where they spent the next decade expanding the brand.
Where We Are Today
In 2009, Suits You Sexy Swimwear returned to its roots, moving back to Clearwater into an even larger store and manufacturing shop.
Today, we remain true to the exact formula that started it all on the beach over 29 years ago. We specialize in unique sexy bikinis, micro swimsuits, and custom contest wear. Lucy still leads all the designing, and Clyde still builds and maintains the website.
